Currently there are talks underway suggesting that this particular route could be turned into an electric line.
Electrification of rail creates a 50 per cent running cost reduction, when compared to diesel trains and a discount of 33 per cent in terms of maintenance, according to Network Rail. This is coupled with the fact the vehicles emit 30 per cent less CO2.
Iain Coucher, Network Rail's chief executive, said: "Passengers would see enormous benefits from further electrification with faster, quieter, smoother, greener journeys.
"The case for the Midland Main Line is extremely strong," he concluded.
Mr Coucher summarised that for such a project to get the go ahead, it would have to be proved that it is affordable to execute.
However, Network Rail claims that "electrification can pay for itself", as the initial investments are outweighed by the long-term reduced running costs.
Having taken over the responsibility for running Britain's railway in 2002, train punctuality has improved from being 78.6 per to reaching 89.9 per cent for 2007/08, says the company.
