It is seen as essential for the work to be carried out, with Dorset Country Council being offered financial support by Network Rail.

This particular level crossing is said to have experienced a high level of accidents in comparison to others.

Since the beginning or this year it is said that there have been nine "near-misses" at the site.

Richard O'Brien, Wessex route director for Network Rail, said: "We take responsibilities around safety very seriously. We hope our support to part-fund the footbridge will help the council build a safer alternative to connect the communities - and ultimately protect lives."

He added that a footbridge at the location would assist in making misuse of the level crossing decline and commented that by people not using such facilities correctly they are putting their lives in danger.

Network Rail currently employs around 35,000 staff.
