A visit to the area by Derby County's manager, Nigel Clough and Tom Glick, the club chief executive, came about in celebration of the opening of the completed local station after renovation works had ceased.
Mark Tarry, area manager for Network Rail, said: "Passengers can now enjoy a much brighter, smarter and more spacious station following this £21m project that has literally transformed the station.
"With new lifts and stairways it's so much easier to get around."
After a year's work, passengers can now enjoy light platforms, wider staircases, lift access and improved waiting rooms. There has also been the addition of staff rooms and new toilet facilities which have all served to transform what was a dated 1950s station, according to Network Rail.
Mr Tarry highlighted that movement around the station has been improved, especially in the cases of those who need to navigate prams, which can prove heavy, or for anyone who has a disability.
Network Rail claims at present, Britain's railways are the most busy they have been for more than 60 years.
