At a public meeting it was decided to launch a campaign to raise funds to extend the area's rail service.

For years the Strathspey steam railway has fallen short of reaching Grantown by three miles and now local people intend to raise the funds for the extension.

Speaking to the Press and Journal Danny Alexander, a MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, said: "The Strathspey Steam Railway is already one of the most popular attractions in the Strath.

"Extending the railway will bring significant economic benefits to Grantown as well as opening the railway experience to an even wider group of people."

He added that it was a vital project for the national park too and that because of everyone's tremendous efforts that it deserved to and would succeed.

It is anticipated that the volunteers need to come up with around £5 million for the project.

According to Network Rail, Britain's rail lines are the busiest they have been for the last 60 years.
