The £50 million was awarded as transport secretary Andrew Adonis highlighted the vast difference in standards throughout the network.
Welcoming the independent Station Champions report on the subject, which identified ten locations in need of improvement, he said each should have adequate facilities and act as a hub for the community.
"I intend to make these minimum standards a requirement in future rail franchise agreements with train operating companies," Mr Adonis added.
Today (November 17th), he will embark on a journey encompassing the ten stations earmarked for the £50 million fund. The list includes Stockport, Wigan, Liverpool and Crewe.
Station Champions Professor Sir Peter Hall and Chris Green will also be taking the trip and pointed out how important these aspects of rail travel are, because they are a "gateway" to a town or transport network.
The news follows an announcement earlier this week that certain rail services will aim to provide continued quality of service when they change hands from National Express East Coast to the East Coast Main Line Company.
