The transport secretary ventured on his journey after a report on the state of UK rail stations was published. Today, he wrote about his experience.
At about 18:15 GMT, he left Liverpool Lime Street after visiting Liverpool Central, the latter of which was named as one of the top ten facilities most in need of improvements.
But Lord Adonis took the chance to highlight the work of the people who took charge of modernising and expanding Merseyrail's metro.
He explained that the travel centre at Liverpool Central - which he opened - was comprehensive in its product range and gives passengers the opportunity to buy any of a full range of train tickets.
"This is an exciting innovation in rail retailing which deserves to be closely studied by other train companies," the secretary added.
Some £50 million was also announced yesterday for improving the stations named as the worst. These also include Crewe and Clapham Junction.
