The £15.9 billion project is set to open up the capital to more people and give them access to "thousands of job opportunities".

The company also discussed what it will be looking for in contractors and successful bidders, which could give rail vacancy candidates a good idea of what to expect should they end up working on part of Crossrail's developments.

"We will be looking for innovative approaches from tenderers, representing the best and most professional project skills available in the market, both in the UK and internationally."

Earlier this week, members of the public were invited by Crossrail to see its proposals for what was described as a "tunnelling academy".

The sessions took place at the Froud Community Centre in Manor Park.
