From January 2nd 2010, the pay-as-you-go system will be useable on National Rail services in addition to the tube.

As of today, (November 23rd), passengers travelling on Thames Clipper journeys will also be able to use their Oyster cards.

TfL said commuters in the aforementions regions of London are likely to benefit greatly, because pay-as-you-go Oyster is not currently accepted on most rail services in these areas.

Mayor Boris Johnson said the development put an end to the "crackers situation" of Oyster not be useable on all routes.

However, transport secretary Andrew Adonis said the progress must be continued.

"I want to see smart ticketing on all modes of public transport in England as quickly as possible," he explained.

Oyster cards can store up to £90 of credit.
