Farringdon station is to be transformed into one of London's major transportation hubs, with numerous rail jobs potentially created along the way, it has been stated.
With work on the east London station currently underway, the government's transport minister Sadiq Kahn laid out his grand ambitions for Farringdon during a visit to the site.
As an integrated Crosslink and Thameslink station, it is set to be handling up to 140 trains every hour by 2017, including connections to all four of the capital's main airports and its two international rail stations, in St Pancras and, by 2012, Stratford.
Mr Kahn said: "I'm pleased to see that work is well underway here to make this vision a reality and translate the Government's multi-billion pound investment into better services for people travelling in and through London."
The current demolition of the 42-metre high Cardinal Tower has already created a number of rail jobs at Farringdon, with more set to follow through the planned construction of a main ticket hall.
Meanwhile, a new footbridge connecting Docklands Light Railway and national rail services in Limehouse has been officially opened by London mayor Boris Johnson after supporting dozens of rail jobs over the past few months.
