Network Rail has identified 20 routes for special attention which are said to carry 60 per cent of all weekend travellers.

Iain Coucher, the organisation's chief executive, said: "Today's punctual, reliable and safe railway has seen passengers flocking back. Their expectations for a decent service at weekends and at bank holidays have grown and we must respond."

He added that the organisation's objective is to keep passengers on trains as opposed to buses.

The newly proposed commitment will come in over the next two years, including a London to Scotland additional route always being available.

Since taking on the responsibility of the network in 2002, Network Rail claims to have dramatically cut costs, reduced delays and exceeded its own safety targets.

In the past five years it states that it has improved efficiency by almost 30 per cent.
