Network Rail has awarded a key contract for pre-construction services to a new national centre in Milton Keynes based on a range of principals designed to limit energy consumption and its impact on the environment.

Housing up to 3,000 employees, the centre will bring new rail jobs to the area and aims to improve teamwork and planning, and provide better support to the route and area teams.

The move will also reduce the amount of office space Network Rail rents at a number of locations around the UK, saving the company millions of pounds.

Network Rail's five-year Delivery Plan was published in March 2009, detailing a £10 billion programme of investment in the railway, including major projects such as Thameslink.
