Transport experts have predicted that plans for the freight interchange could bring £200m investment and up to 4,400 jobs to the area, reports Spalding Today.

South Holland council must select a site by March 2010 if it is to tie in with Network Rail's plans for the line.

The rail company is spending around £240 million improving the local infrastructure to divert rail freight traffic from the East Coast Main Line to the Joint Line.

Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum chairman George Scott said Donington was a good choice because of its potential for development "not only as a diversionary line, but also to bring economical benefits to our area".

If the move is given the go ahead, it is likely that more rail jobs would be created by extra freight services on the Spalding line, necessitating longer operating hours with extra shifts at signal boxes.
