Lord Adonis' recent announcement of a £200 million electrification programme covering three major rail routes in the north-west is in addition to the £1.1 billion electrification plans involving London to Swansea and Liverpool to Manchester lines announced in July.
The combined impact of all these new electrification programmes is likely to increase the proportion of all electric train journeys in the UK from 60 per cent of journeys to 67 per cent, signalling a boost for rail jobs.
Political leaders from across the east Midlands have also called on Lord Adonis to consider electric rail links in the region, reports the BBC.
The latest scheme, combined with other improvements to track and signalling on the lines, will improve journeys between several of the key towns and cities in the north-west, Lord Adonis claimed.
This will mean two-thirds of all national passenger rail travel will be on electrified routes.
