Figures published by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) show that a total of 814,000 cheap Advance tickets were sold from December 1st to December 10th, a rise of 12.5 per cent when compared to the same period last year.

Train companies have attributed the boom in bargain tickets largely to the fact that more people are planning their finances in advance and reining in their spending during the recession.

On average, half a million cheap advance tickets are sold every week by train companies.

And following the announcement that Oyster smart cards used on the capital's metro, bus and light rail services will be valid for pay as you go travel on rail services in Greater London from January 2nd, train travel is not showing signs of dying down anytime soon.
