Figures recently released by Network Rail showed that delays caused by infamous "leaves on the line" were also cut by 40 per cent.
The company's latest train performance results saw almost 90 per cent of trains arriving on time during November - the best on record.
Combined with October's record result of just over 90 per cent, this made 2009 the most efficient autumn ever.
Robin Gisby, director of operations and customer service, said that while it had not been the easiest autumn - with extreme weather and flooding affecting passengers and train operators in some areas - the hard work made by Network Rail in making its railways more resilient had paid off.
Network Rail engineers were also busy over the Christmas period, as thousands worked around the clock to upgrade and maintain Britain's railways by delivering longer platforms, wider bridges, better stations and new tracks and signals.
